February 2017 - Brass Band

9th February 2017

The children were treated to an amazing concert by a small brass band of professional players from St Georges Brandon Hill. Not only did they play fabulous music, but the leader Laura, explained lots about the instruments themselves. Each instrument was explained and showcased, with references to its history, the science behind it and how to make the different sounds. Who would have thought that years before we were texting and emailing each other a simple bugle could send a message... even a large conch shell could do that job! By showing us the different techniques for using our lips and making sounds the musicians demonstrated that you could even play a tune on a long pipe and a funnel. The band brought the music alive to the children and the time went quickly by as the children enjoyed a wide variety of music from past to present. What a fantastic groups of musicians!
