Our teachers’ names are Miss Wall and Miss Leach and we also work with lots of other adults such as Mrs Harris (TA), Mrs Cleary (TA), Mrs Young (1:1), Miss Chenoweth (1:1) Mrs Slee (Numbers Count Teacher) and Miss Morse (Reading Recovery). We are split into two classes: Miss Leach’s class is called Mayflower and Miss Wall's is called Matthew. We’re named after ships you know!
Everyone is working really hard and we are looking forward to a very exciting year! Below you will find information about the classes, as well as updates as to how we're getting on, with photos and examples of work.
School opens for children at 8.45am. Registers will be taken at 8.55am. Children will be dismissed from each classroom to the Key Stage 1 playground at 3.15pm.
Year 2 have P.E. lessons on a Wednesday and Friday, so please ensure PE kits are left in school. It is important to note that Friday’s lesson will usually take place outside and on colder days children will need to bring warmer clothes, such as jogging bottoms and a hoody or sweatshirt. We’re still learning to take responsibility for our clothes, so help us by putting our name on every item that we have to take off.
Spellings tests will happen on Thursdays. During the test we will write out the words in a list, but we will also have dictation sentences where some of our words will feature. We have to get them correct both times! Any extra support you can give your children to learn these spellings will really help them remember the words for the test and then for their writing in the future
Homework will be given out on Fridays and is expected to be given in by Thursday. It will often be maths or English based. This is as well as our daily reading practice, our times tables practice and learning our spellings each week. There will also be longer term homework projects. Please support us with our homework and make sure we are being accurate and write neatly. Often there's a challenge activity to try so that we can really extend our learning. If you have any questions at all please pop in and speak to one of the teachers.
What are we learning about this term?
We have got a very exciting time in English in year 2. The year starts with lots of different types of writing including stories, poems and descriptions. We also do some non-fiction writing such as writing recipes and instructions. We read some exciting stories about Amazing Grace and this supports our work about Africa. Then we read a story of a very different kind where a lion comes to school and what happens when he does. Then we all look forward to our mixed media topic about Mr Benn. He has many interesting adventures and we write our own adventures about some of them.
Later on in the year we will be creating amazing Magic Key stories. We will be finding out all about meerkats and their lives. We study some famous authors such as Francesca Simon and Philippa Pearce. After our visit to the SS Great Britain we will be finding out more about the inspiring work and life of Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
We will be learning about traditional tales – some that date back even further than Grandma can remember! We will be enjoying stories such as Rumpelstiltskin and the Magic Fish and the Three Wishes. We look at famous authors such as Anthony Browne and see how important illustrations can be to add to stories. We will also be doing lots of writing in all our other subjects too.
This year we will be learning new practical and written methods for all four number operations. We do lots of work on place value and get to know our odd and even numbers. We will be focussing especially on multiplication and division when we learn our times tables as well as counting in 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s. The children will continue to practise all four rules and with a special focus on reasoning and problem solving. We will also be practising different types of measuring including length, weight and capacity.
The children will find out all about the names and properties of 2D and 3D shapes. We will be learning to tell the time including o’clock, half past, quarter to and quarter past as well as learning 5 minute intervals and digital time. It would be great if you could help us practise telling the time at home too. We learn all about money and how to add up totals of money and give change. Some of the numbers that we do are getting quite big and some of us even manage to count up to 1000! Near the end of the year we will be learning column method in addition and subtraction.
We will be doing lots of exciting topics this year. Please look at our topic webs on this website for details. You can help your child by researching the relevant topics on the internet or by visiting the library. Our on-going topic about the weather will be studied at different times throughout the year. This is so that we can watch the seasons change and see how the weather is different at different points of the year.
Some of the amazing things we learn about in year 2 are: World War 1, Life in Ghana, Plants and animals, materials, Living in France, Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Hannukah, Making a real winding up toy, sewing puppets, Stories that Jesus told, St Lucia in the Caribbean. As well as all these we learn lots of other things in Art, PE, Music and PSHE. We also learn to play some notes on the recorder.
The highlight of the year is always Barton Camp when we go in the summer. It’s great fun to have a sleep over with all our friends! We learn lots of important things at camp such as looking after ourselves, eating nicely with other people, trying new things, being adventurous and of course becoming more independent. There are so many opportunities for learning in year 2 and so many wonderful trips to go on, we are sure that you’ll look back at the end of the year and realise that we did so much together!
As part of our History topic Year 2 were invited to attend the Royal British Legion’s Memorial Service in Whitchurch. The children played an active role in the Service, participating in the 2 minute silence as well as laying Poppy Wreaths and speaking with veterans.
Science Walk to the Open Space
The children in year 2 walked to the Open Space in Stockwood armed with iPads, magnifying glasses, bug catchers and clipboards. We were there to look for habitats and to see which animals and plants we could recognise and record. We used a helpful check list to tick off when we found a particular bug or plant. Then we photographed them with the iPads. How many creatures do you think we found?
