WELCOME TO RECEPTION

General information

We believe that every child deserves the best possible start in life and we are committed to supporting them to reach their full potential, building solid foundations on which to expand and foster a deep love of learning.
Learning through play is at the heart of our approach to teaching and learning in the Early Years. Children learn best from activities and experiences that interest and inspire them, and we aim to provide children with stimulating, active play experiences through which they can explore and develop their learning to help them make sense of the world. As parents, you are your child’s first educators. Your child is already an experienced learner, bringing from home a great deal of knowledge about themselves and their world. We hope to be able to work in partnership with you to build on, and extend your child’s developing skills, interests and experiences.

Knowing how your child is getting on

In Reception we continue to use ILD (Interactive Learning Diary) to capture and record the observations made as children explore and learn, just as the Nursery staff used it the previous year. If you are a new family to the school, a secure access password to the Parent Portal will be given to you to allow you to view your child’s progress at any time. This will enable you to become fully involved in your child’s learning and development through active participation. The main purpose of ILD is for it to be used as an assessment tool for staff working with your children. We use it to inform our planning and to tailor our lessons to ensure all children have the opportunity to achieve all of the statements of learning in the Early Years curriculum. Throughout the year you will see a mixture of whole class, group and individual observations, capturing milestones achieved. Unlike nursery, there will not be as many observations, as children’s work will be recorded in a range of ways. Many of their literacy skills will be captured in their books which you will be able to see during parents’ meetings.
