Key vocabulary we use in phonics: 

  • phoneme- this is the smallest unit of sound
  • grapheme-the letters that are used to make the phoneme
  • digraph- this is 2 letters that make one sound. E.g. ch
  • trigraph- this is 3 letters that make one sound. E.g. igh
